How to Stay Fresh After a Long Shift: A Tradesperson's Guide
Whether you're on a building site, in a warehouse, on a ward or under a car, long physical shifts are tough on your skin. Heavy clothing, safety boots and hours of sweating make staying fresh a real challenge. Here's what actually helps.
Why odour builds up on long shifts
Fresh sweat doesn't really smell. Odour comes when sweat sits on the skin and mixes with the bacteria that naturally live there – especially in warm, covered areas like underarms, feet, the groin and your back under a hi-vis or work jacket. The longer sweat sits, the stronger the smell.
Before your shift
- Shower with a proper cleansing wash. A tea tree body wash deep-cleanses and helps keep odour at bay for longer than a basic shower gel.
- Dry thoroughly – especially between your toes and in skin folds. Damp skin under work clothes is where problems start.
- Apply antiperspirant at night. It works best on dry skin while you're less sweaty, then again in the morning if needed.
- Wear breathable base layers. Moisture-wicking or cotton layers under workwear help sweat evaporate instead of soaking in.
During your shift
- Change your socks at lunch. It sounds small, but a fresh pair halfway through the day makes a huge difference to your feet and boots.
- Keep a spare top in the van or locker.
- Stay hydrated. It won't stop sweating, but it helps your body regulate temperature.
After your shift
- Shower as soon as you can. The sooner sweat comes off, the better.
- Focus on the hot spots – underarms, feet, groin, back and chest.
- Air your boots. Take the insoles out and let them dry overnight. Rotating two pairs of work boots is even better.
- Wash workwear regularly – odour can cling to fabric even after your skin is clean.
